Jesus preached to the crowds (Luke. 5:1-15) and discipled the twelve (Luke 6:12-16), so He clearly valued both large gatherings and small groups. However, in this day and age where online content is abundant, the passive experience of attending a service has arguably become less important. On the other hand, many studies have shown that Australians are lonelier than ever before. Therefore, there is a greater need for intimate settings where it is easier to foster deep and meaningful relationships.

Where large gatherings are more conducive for the curious to see and hear, small groups are more conducive for the solitary to be seen and heard. As such, Flow Church will alternate weekly between centralised large gatherings and localised small groups, meaning that what is traditionally understood as Sunday services will happen only twice a month. This encourages the view of small groups as essential, and to be regarded as “church” as much as large gatherings.
